I actually am working towards a bigger piece here, so I don’t want to steal too much of my own thunder or material. But I still want to get some feedback.
The question of the day is how should Major League Soccer teams spend their money on Designated Players?
It’s basically a free ticket to spend as much money as you want on three players. We’ve the league itself spend it on a wide variety of players. From Defenders such as Rafa Marquez to stars on the back end of their careers such as David Beckham, Robbie Keane, Freddie Ljundberg, Thierry Henry, Juan Pablo Ángel and even Torsten Frings.
Then you also have the inverse of such. Teams going after younger unproven players such as Jerry Bengston, Fredy Montero, Alvaro Fernandez, Fabian Castillo and Raphael Augusto. They’ve also chosen to locked down domestic stars Landon Donovan, Shalrie Joseph and Freddy Adu.
Just curious, if there a specific manner in which fans would like to the team sign Designated Players. And a sub question to that should teams build their team around their designated players or use designated players to augment the holes on a team?
Would love some feedback today on Presidents Day!
