There are a few whispers and chatters still going around the twitter that the Sounders and Chivas may still be entertaining a trade for Shalrie Joseph. It’s not really surprising to me. I know, I know… with all that talk from Coach Sigi Schmid you would have thought this was not really going to work out.
I’m not cynical but as I said the other day, I’m not surprised if it simply turned out to be defensive trade posture. It wouldn’t be the first time someone in a position of leadership within a sports franchise did that.
The real thinking than begins. If the two are working to get a deal done what does Seattle have to do to acquire him? There isn’t much cap space so you have to believe that there is the possibility that Chivas is interested in possibly swapping players. The Sounders actually have three players (Estrada, Ochoa and Servando Carrasco on the club with Mexican-American heritage (by my count).
Regardless of if you believe it wrong or right, Chivas is trying to cater to what they believe to be their fan base and support structure–as small as it may be. There are talents that within the organization that could potentially be desirable to the Chivas. Unfortunately the only one I would be interesting, if I were them, is the one guy that I wouldn’t want to give up.
David Estrada seems certainly a logical fit for Chivas. Between the current state of transition on the club at the forward position and his soon to be growing expense, it could make sense on some levels on the Sounders side. But if the Sounders are, in fact, interested in driving more towards a 4-3-3 or other type of formation with wingers it could make sense to keep him and his frustrating work rate around.
Of course, there is also the question of if Estrada is traded and Mario Martinez heads back home in the middle of the year, what happens to your depth up top? Sammy Ochoa is a fine player but not what I would consider a to be the striker on a team that is competing for the supporters shield.
I understand that there are some that feel that Estrada, in general, is overrated due to his quick start and early goal tally in 2012 and that this is kind of “cashing” in on his trade value while it’s still around. I’m not necessarily inclined to agree. But should the Sounds flip Estrada for Joseph and, I kind of alluded to it last night, if the club is able to move Cato for a bit of allocation money. The Sounders could–POTENTIALLY–buy Joseph out of his DP contract and into a more agreeable and manageable form.
Maybe, Chivas just wants Carrasco for Alex Morgan.
