Let the whining and complaining beginning!
I know that a lot of people are going to be really disappointed with Brad Evans being selected. But he really did a lot more than meets the eye in the game, last week, against the Canucks. Maybe he wasn’t in the perfect midfielder marriage with Beckerman and I think a lot of that has to do with the expectation of him being a play maker–which I still can’t believe was his purpose in the midfield–which was evident from out of the right back position in the second half. He can still create chances and quiet possibly has the highest soccer IQ on the roster. That’s his value with this team going forward.
Eddie Johnson of course isn’t going to take a lot of shots, but what he’s going to do is work well with the ball at his feet. Draw defenders in, beat them at times and create opportunities for that second striker. He can obviously win a lot of balls in the air with his head and be a difference maker as we saw a couple different times at years end at the national team level.
It’s most likely that Evans will serve in the 18 man bench capacity as his versatility is likely the reason for his selection, considering the injury to Steve Cherundolo. While Eddie Johnson like makes the club as more of a question mark.
A long with Eddie, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore and Herculez Gomez were also named to as forwards. So it remains a myster as far as how the Yanks formation will work itself out come Wedensday afternoon. It’s very possible that there is a 4-3-3 or some sort of 4-5-1 type of formation. But none the less, EJ plays a vital role for the US team going down the stretch of World Cup qualifiers, regardless of if or how many minutes he puts on to the pitch this week.
