Last week was rather boring. We had the whole Sounders rivlary game and their amazing outting against Portland on Sunday, then…crickets, absolutely nothing. We all had the anticipation of Friday and the USMNT heading to Barbuda… maybe it was Antigua… I don’t know and I’m too lazy to really look at the moment. What was great was seeing Eddie Johnson score, not once but twice, on a pitch that looked like hell and the game was borderline infuriating.
None the less we watched Eddie come back and put together yet another strong performance tonight. A game in which he had multiple opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net and even helped Clint Dempsey put the Yanks up for good. Let’s not forget about Mario Martinez, who, not only had an assist of his own but also a brace, in the same game, to counter that of Eddie Johnson’s production. Adam Johansson again made the 18 in Sweden’s epic 4-goal come back to earn a draw against Germany, but did not see the action.
What really mattered over the last week and a half… the void of a regular league play. The good news is that this week we do a 180 of sorts and have a heck of schedule headed our way.I was in my car, driving back from lunch, when I realized that we already have a Sounders game tomorrow against RSL, then again Sunday with FC Dallas and Wednesday we have a CCL match. So lots coming down the pipe for all of us Sounders.
I loved having international matches. Their a lot of fun and there is always national pride and for some reason, in my own mind, it’s a measure at which we can see the focus on U.S. Soccer in a time of season at which, in this country, football has a complete different meaning.
Now that it’s over it’s exciting to see what’s going to come from the Sounders-RSL game and how the West is going to shape up over the next few games.
